Kid's bodice pattern and an example how to use it

We always starts with taking measurement of back length and bust, then use the measurement to form a rectangle.
Divide the rectangle into 4 parts according to the picture.

Find the length between the middle of chest or back to arm holes. We first divide the middle line into 3 parts.

Next, measure 1.5 cm toward the center for the back piece, 0.7 cm for the front.  The is the reference line for drawing arm hole.

Finally, work on the bottom of the front.

Now, we have the bodice pattern.

I make a dress pattern to show you how to use the pattern we just make. Here is the dress.

Sorry I am not a good artist.

This a basic dress with a gathered skirt, with a bust of 60 cm and waist of 54 cm.

Let's start with the front. I want to make a snuggle fit.  So, I stay pretty much close to the bodice.

In order to fit to the actual waist, I took in 2 cm on the side and made a dart of 3 cm.
Adjust the length to the back piece.  You have to save this step till you finish the back piece.
Here is the finished back piece.

The sleeves, we start with drawing 2 lines to form a cross, then add the length of arm holes, front on the right, left on the left.

Mark the places that needed to used for form curves.  You can use this as a bodice pattern for sleeves.

Form the curves and decide the length of the sleeves.  This measurement is taken from the armpit down.
Now, we finish the sleeve pattern by taking in 2 cm on both side.  You don't need to take in 2 cm if you want it looser.
As for the skirt, you can decide how wide and long you want it, then gather to fit the upper part of the dress.

That's it!

A Navy Blue Vest

A Navy Blue Vest

Here are the patterns.  We will need your bodice pattern for making this vest.  Get your tools out and get started.

Front

First, trace your front bodice patter to the paper.

Then, add the reference lines .

From there, you can start adding to it to form the pattern for the vest.

Back

We will need to start with bodice pattern.

Add reference lines.

Then the pattern.

Collar

We need to measure the front and back neck lines from the pattern we already made.

The last part is the lining.  We use the finished front and back patter to make this.

Here is a tip for sewing the white trim on.  We don't want to bind it like binding quilt.  It will look bulky.  I sew it on the lining first, after assembling it will only show on the front.

If you want, you can add a little buckle on the back.

That's it.  Happy sewing!

Add Some Summer to Your Closet!

Add Some Summer to Your Closet!

Learn to make patterns of this shirt and skirt.   Here are the tools you will need.

Paper, measuring tape, different color pens, pencil scissors, ruler, curve ruler (if you don't have this it is fine.)

and bodice pattern.  If you don't have those yet, you can learn to make your own from this blog.

SHIRT

Now, we can get started.  We will make the pattern for the shirt first.  Here is the front

Don't forget to  apply a 2 cm wide interfacing at the front openings.

Back piece

Collar,  you will need 2 pieces of each with interfacing applied to the one that will be on the top.

Here are the patterns for the shirt.  It should be an easy one to conquer, even though the collar could be a little tricky.  You learn from challenge, don't you.

SKIRT

Now the skirt.  This skirt has 9 pleats.  We will need to do some calculation to figure out how many and how wide the pleats are.

To figure out how wide a pleat should be, simply divide the waist by the number of pleats. For example, someone with waist of 72 cm , which is divided by 9 pleats, the width of a pleat will be 8 cm.

To form a complete pleat, you will need 3 times the width of a pleat we come up with from the above.  Here is a picture.

So the width of the material need for this skirt will be the width of a pleat x 3 x 9, or you can just use the measurement of your waist x 3.  From the example above, it will be 72 x 3 = 216.

Here is the pattern:

Here are the patterns.  Happy sewing.
